9/26/2014:    Again, you have and your committee have done an amazing job of organizing the reunion.  It was so enjoyable!

I am ashamed to say that I did not get to talk with all of our classmates, and as I look at the pictures, I cannot put names and faces together.  Can you list the names on the group picture?

Thank you for your efforts!  We are planning for the next 5-year event!

9/26/2014:  Hi all,

I hope everyone has looked at Clayton's flickr page at

It's a really nice collection of shots from the reunion dinner.

Even though I'm not a member of the class of 1964, it was my privilege to take the class group photo.  I graduated from Eisenhower in Yakima in 1963.  But, my wife (Janet Burns) is a member of the class of TopHi 1964.  So, I guess that rows me aboard here.

Anyway, if anyone is interested in a high resolution version of the group photo, I'd be happy to email it to you.  It's a big file, about 10 MB, and is in TIFF format.  If you have a good color printer, you can make your own print, or email it to Costco and have them print it.

Let me know if you want one.  This was a big deal, they're aren't too many 50th reunions.  We may never get all these folks together again.

Thanks for letting me be part of it.

It was a great 50th Reunion for TopHi '64

We made it.  Congratulations to all who were able to attend and make our 50th Reunion such an enjoyable evening.

More updates from Classmates

Gail Rankin-Sullivan

I am sorry that again, I will not be able to attend, another reunion, but I am sending this update.

I have had no LONG trips out of the country or out of state, but I am doing a fair amount of travelling around the state being quite involved in United Methodist Women (UMW).  According to a hat that I decorated just recently at a district executive board meeting, I am a woman wearing many hats.  First my husband, Richard Sullivan, better known as "Sully", and I will celebrate our 43 wedding anniversary in December.  We have two sons, Sean (41) and Kevin (37).  Sean and his wife, Kay, have given us two grandsons, Brendan (14 1/2) and Hadley (13).  Hadley currently is living with us during the school week.  The family is split up geographically while they get back on track with their finances and find a new place to live.  Hadley wanted to stay at the school he was going to last year, which is over on the other side of town from us.  We are learning alot about how things have changed since we and our kids were in school.
We also have a two year old Bombay cat named Armas, after Sully's Finnish grandfather.

In United Methodist Women, I am Education and Interpretation mission coordinator for our local unit and currently on the Committee on Nominations for the Pacific Northwest Conference UMW.  Because of my responsibilities on the Conference, I am also on the Puget Sound District UMW executive team.  I spent thirteen years on the district team before being elected to the conference team.  On the district, I was on the Committee on Nominations, Secretary of Program Resources, and Education and Interpretation mission coordinator.  I am on the church mission and outreach team.  I ring hand bells at church, Bellingham Garden Street UMC.

For eleven years, I have facilitated a weekly lectionary study group, which I helped to start with another gal.  We have an average of ten to twelve members each week and we have a lot of fun along with studying.  I knit 3x3 inch prayer squares, which people have liked just as much as prayer shawls.
Sully oversees the audio visual ministries at church and is very involved with the Happy Valley Neighborhood Association.  I support Sully with his involvement with the neighborhood, by participating in various neighborhood activities.  Sully and I have also been members of the Puget Sound Walk To Emmaus Community since 1992.

One of my two brothers, Tim, and his wife, live here in Bellingham, and are permanent legal guardians of two of their grandchildren, a ten year old granddaughter and a 14 1/2 year old grandson, so besides supporting our grandsons with their activities, we enjoy supporting our great neice and nephew with their activities.

The past four years I have spent getting back to better health.  In 2010, I was diagnosed with AFib and AFlutter and a mild enlargement of my heart, so I am on three heart medications, a blood pressure pill and blood thinner.  All meds are low dosages except for the blood thinner.  In 2012, I had cataract surgery on both eyes, so I can see more clearly.  In 2013 was the last of my deferred maintenance makeover-abdominal hernia repair in June 2013, and then a right hip replacement, followed up with six months of physical therapy.  I think I inherited my dad's bad back and bad hips.  Before my hip replacement I was walking on a frozen right hip and the other hip was moderately degenerated.  For long distant walking, I use my dad's cane that he used.  I wonder how many baby boomers are using their parents' canes after joint surgery?!!  I will try to send you an updated picture before the reunion.

My only two LONG trips out of state and out of the country were in 1991 to Tijuana, Mexico, 1992 to El Salvador, and 1994 to Cincinnati, Ohio.  Since my dad died in 1998, I have not been to the Yakima Valley, so it will be good to see the area again while in Yakima for church-related meetings in October.  I prefer to live up here in Bellingham, in what has been called God's Country by many.  The weather is manageable, the traffic, the same.  We can get from one end of town to the other in 15 minutes, if we have to, and there is alot of green trees and colorful flowers and the bay and lakes.  The things that we are doing with the church and the neighborhood and family are very fulfilling for us.  We enjoy serving God and our neighbors in all that we do, how we end our study time in lectionary each week.

I wish you all good health and peace in your lives.  I have a Facebook page, but have not kept it up for a LONG time.  I like communicating  by email better. My email is:  dgkitten at juno.com

Hello. Congratulations to all of us for managing to make it to 50 years post high school. I still live in Jerusalem, Israel. After years of college, I ended-up being housewife to a very nice man who, sadly, passed away four years ago. I enjoy myself playing bassoon in local orchestras; and I keep and breed small birds for fun. I won't be coming to the reunion because it a very long trip; and I am not a traveler. I wish my fellow graduates blessings for happiness and a good life.

I've had adventurous life.  After graduation and then college, I worked for a couple of large companies.  The most memorable was IBM in Honolulu, Hawaii.  In the late 70's I jumped off the corporate ship and became an entrepreneur, and started a ten-minute oil change chain.  then another in the San Francisco Bay area.  Along the way my wife, JoAnn, and I had three children who we are very proud of.  Sonja graduated from Marquette University, other daughter Rémy graduated from Univ. of Wyoming, and son, Carsten, attended Montana State then graduated from construction supervision program in Tucson, AZ.  Sonja was the Maid of Honor for one of her friends recently, and the below photo is from that wedding a few years ago.

Pat O'Day
I've had a couple of great times along the way.  During the 90's I built a couple of businesses in the former Soviet Union.... a telecom business and a rock'n roll radio station in St. Petersburg.  In St. Petersburg, I did business with the city official, Vladimir Putin (now president of Russia).  And even more fun and memories came my way when Pat O'Day (former KJR disk jockey, station manager, and concert promoter) spent a week training our Russian on-air talent on how to be entertaining disk jockeys.  Pat wrote of the experience in the final chapter of his book.

In fact, I'm having a catch-up lunch with Pat next week to celebrate his birthday.  He became a good friend while we introduced the Russians to entertainment radio and rock'n roll music.

These days I'm playing on the front edge of the new media wave as I develop and market mobile apps for smart phones and tablets.  I worked with Washington Tourism as I developed Visit WA as my first app -- it's available for iPhones and Android phones at the app stores under the name VisitWA .   It's popularity is largely due to being the only organized source for free things to see and do.  We are introducing our second app this month for Lisbon, Portugal.  And more are in the pipeline.

I can't believe how the years have flown by.  It used to be that the 50th Reunion was for really old people, yet here we are.  I've survived open-heart surgery, and I'm ready for another 50.  See you at the reunion.

Updates from Classmates

Ok, so the photo is 10 years old. I still look the same only without the moustache. Who would have ever known how lucky my life has been. Never sick, wonderful wife, retired 10 years ago as telecom exec., famous brother, Lee (in photo) and living the dream in Southern Cal. 5 grandkids, traveled the world and can't wait to see all of you to share your wonderful stories. Ran into Ken Davido on a trip to Mexico a number of years ago. He looked the same as he always did.

Update since my last class reunion appearance:  I retired in 2006 after 28 years in the legal field.  My husband and I still farm cherries and apples. Our family consists of daughter Susan and her husband Scott and two grandchildren, Emily and Tyler, both attending college, all from Zillah, and our son Randy and his wife Shelly, who live near Southern Pines, North Carolina.

I enjoy gardening with flowers, trees and shrubs.  However, thinking about the immediate future and my age, my thoughts drift about transforming my high maintenance yard to low maintenance (my husband says it should be less).

Volunteering to honor our fallen troops through the Wreaths Across America organization has been a gratifying experience for me.  When my friend Ginger, a Gold Star Mother whose son was killed in Iraq, asked me (Gold Star Sister) if I wanted to join her to organize a wreath laying movement in Grandview, I gladly accepted.  It was our mission to have a Lower Valley participation emulating the Wreaths Across America national wreath laying ceremony held each year in December at Arlington National Cemetery.  In each of the past three years, we reached out to our local community to get sponsorship wreaths to be placed on our local veterans’ graves.  Our efforts to Remember, Honor and Teach about those who have served their country in the military and to support the Gold Star Mothers of Washington organization were well received in our community.  Our goal this year is to have a wreath for each of the 460+ veterans buried at Grandview Cemetery. I have included a couple of newspaper articles below.  More information about WAA is available at www.wreathsacrossamerica.org.  If you are interested in sponsoring a wreath to either the Arlington National Cemetery or the Grandview event (or both) this coming December, let me know.  Thank you.

One important life-changing event for me was when in September 2010 I had a cochlear implant in my left ear.  The out-patient surgery at Seattle’s Swedish Hospital was successful.  Four weeks later the sound processor was activated.  At first I was nervous because of the mapping procedure of the sound processor.  But since that time I continue to learn new sounds and speech signals.

A final note to say:  it was a pleasant surprise to learn a few years ago our new neighbor, Bruce Johnson, is a retired Toppenish High School teacher.   Some of you from the Toppenish area may know him.  He is married to the mother of one of our son’s high school classmates, and we know her well.

Audry Hass-Builderback

Hi Clay"ton" :-)

I have been waiting to see if I could make it to the reunion and finally decided I won't be able to make it.  My husband has Alzheimer's and it is getting to the point I shouldn't leave him for a long period of time.

I got to visit with Theresa about a month ago.  We had a mini reunion.  She will not be there as her husband surprised her with a birthday trip to California to visit her daughter that weekend.

My sister Margaret is having their 55 class reunion that weekend also.

I sure will be thinking of everyone and the walk down memory lane at the highschool.

I will not be attending our 50th. Health and family are o.k. And all is well.
Still in Logan, Utah with some wintering time near Phoenix or SanDiego in an RV.

Best wishes to all,
Bill

Dianne Layman/Parks/Williams

Still living in sunny California and enjoying being near my kids and grandchildren. Stacy is still driving truck for CR England and home on weekends. I had left total hip replacement in April and 2 weeks ago had right hip total replacement. Recuperation is going well and soon should be back out on the dance floor. Have a great reunion and I will be thinking of you.

Pam DeGroot-Grasley

Good Morning!
I’m sorry I have taken so long to respond regarding the reunion.  I have finally made a decision.  As many of you may know, I have Parkinson’s Disease and have lived with it now for 24 years.  I have functioned quite well up until about a year ago.  The medication has become increasingly difficult to regulate – I find myself either ‘freezing’ (very difficult or unable to walk) or dealing with dyskinesia (involuntary movement).  As a result, social functions have become more difficult.
Upon the advice of my doctor and with strong support from friends and family,  I am choosing to have ‘Deep Brain Stimulation’ surgery on Oct. 8th.  This is a promising treatment and will hopefully provide me with several more years of quality living.  In preparation for this, I am working at staying strong and well beforehand to improve the healing process after the surgery.
I’m sorry I will miss the reunion and visiting with classmates.  It would have been fun to see the old high school, too.  I hope you will have a fun reunion and will post some pictures.  Hopefully, I will make it to the next one!  I would be happy to send a current photo and greeting to everyone.  Please let me know the email address for that.
Thank you for all your effort and time in planning this event!

                Sincerely,

                Pam (DeGroot) Grasley

Dick Waggener

Hi Clay (and John),

Time does goes by fast.  Yes it does look like I’m not going to make the 50th.  Actually, my decision point is probably at the end of next week, after a PET scan, and consultation with about four doctors, but either of the two likely outcomes (liver surgery, or further chemo) will probably keep me at home.  I’ll give you a further update before the reunion date rolls around.  I did about ten days of travel in July, and that went well, but this time around I’ll probably have to pass.  Maybe we’ll see you at the 55th (or 60th), but you’d probably better put me on the “not attending” side this time around.  J

John, I still see you on the registered list, hope you’ve had a good and full recovery after the heart surgery, pneumonia, and MRSA.  Seems that you’ve had a pretty tough year yourself, but at our age, those kind of things are getting a little more commonplace.  Right, Clay?  Wish you the best, guys!

Give all the classmates my warm greetings.
Dick

Just wanted to let everyone know that I will not be able to attend our 50th
We have pressing matters that must be addressed. Have fun everyone!!!!

Thanks for keeping me informed on our 50th class reunion.  Unfortunately I will not be able to attend the celebration.

Thank you and all the other classmates who have worked so hard on this reunion.  Please tell everyone hi for me.

Kris Sliger-Garland

Very quick summary of my life - -

I attended UPS for 2 yrs then transferred to the UW.  I was there for one year but the last semester I was in the hospital for nearly one month with a severe strep infection - - obviously it really screwed up my classes and I had to take incompletes.  I was majoring in education and hated it.  So I decided to transfer to Seattle University and started there in the Fall…changed majors in my junior year (not a good thing) and added an additional 2 years; graduated in 1970.  Got married when I was 27, moved to LA where my husband worked for JPL and I worked as a social worker for young women 13-18 who were wards of the LA court (that was an experience) and they lived in a private home in Pasadena where I worked.  It was called Rosemary’s Cottage. Then we moved to DC where he worked for NSA.  I worked for Senator Dick Stone from Florida on the Hill - - great experience.  Then we were divorced.  And here I am …still in the DC metro area.  I started my current job in 1985!

Note:  Kris is Executive Vice President of the Composite Can & Tube Institute in Wash. D.C.
